Need Help To Sleep? - Try a Memory Foam Mattress

By: Steve Gee

The reason that you are having trouble sleeping might be because your body can't relax because it can't find a comfortable position to relax in. To properly relax, your body needs to be supported in all the right places such as knees, hip, waist and neck. A possible solution to this might be to change your mattress for a memory foam mattress.

Now memory foam mattresses are expensive so you might want to try the cheaper options of a memory foam pillow or memory foam topper before deciding to go all out for a mattress.
NASA developed memory foam back in the 1970's to provide support for astronauts at take off and landing. Although NASA never used the foam because of the low level gasses it produces, it went through more development before becoming available in the shops in the 1990's. Since then the market has grown and is still growing very quickly, especially as the medical profession recommend its use in the relief of back pain and pressure sores.

The first manufacturer of memory foam mattresses was Tempur-Pedic ® and at first it was used mainly in hospitals. They soon learned that that patients who used the foam, slept better so they expanded their product lines and now sell to the general public. Today there are many manufacturers in the marketplace and some of the largest producers now appear to be China and the Far East.

Memory foam is visco-elastic which means that it responds to temperature change by becoming softer when it is warm and harder when it is cold. That means your body warmth softens the immediate area of foam and moulds to your shape which in turn offers support to all areas and generally makes the bed more comfortable. This is how it gives you help to sleep,

Be careful when buying memory foam products - The cheaper, lower density foams, can become as hard as a board when the real cold weather sets in, or it might turn into a soft goey mass on hot summer nights! The more expensive brands give you a guarantee that they will not suffer from this problem.

Although a memory foam mattress might be the ultimate goal, why not try a memory foam pillow or a memory foam pad first. Many manufacturer's offer a selection of products and some offer a trial period and longer guarantees so that if the product doesn't suit, you can hand it back.

Things you should look for when buying - There are differences in the way mattresses are manufactured so it is important to find out from a retailer how they are made and which would suit you best. Mattresses typically have either three or four inches of memory foam over a denser supportive core. For help to sleep, more depth isn't necessarily a good thing either. You might sink in too far before reaching the core! If you sleep on your tummy you should purchase 2 inch (5cm approx.) foam, if you sleep on your side or you are a medium sized person you should buy a foam memory mattress with three inch (7.5cm approx) foam. Large/heavy people or back sleepers should buy the four inch (10cm approx).

There are many advantages but what about the disadvantages? Why wasn't memory foam used by NASA? Man-made foam products give off gases when new. In your home this isn't a problem because it diminishes very quickly, but it could have been a major hazard in a space capsule where there is nowhere for the gas to go! If you are sensitive to this type of gas, you might be better off finding a natural product like a foam latex mattress.

Make sure that you try out memory foam mattresses in a local shop to find the one that suits you best. You might find better deals online.
